DO YOU WANT TO BECOME AN INDEPENDENT JAFRA CONSULTANT?
FAQs

Is JAFRA a pyramid-type company?

jafra, jafra productsThe people I sponsor as independent JAFRA consultants can move up higher in the company than I do. That's why it's not a pyramid. In a pyramid, you can never move ahead of the person above you. This is also the reason it doesn't matter at what point you're coming into the company.

What if I don't know enough people to do the networking this job involves?

One of the women who's at the top of the company - she's the General Manager for U.S. sales - is from New Mexico. She's now living in California, but when she started she had just moved to the rural town of Magdelena. She says that if she could build a whole network there, anybody can do it! I introduce people to the idea of the FRANK list: Friends, Relatives, Acquaintances, Neighbors, and Kids. You know so many more people than you think you do - your dentist, hairdresser, the mailman, the person at the bank, your neighbors, and the teachers at your kids' schools. I'm also part of a business networking group where we give each other referrals. I find I'm constantly building relationships, whether it's at my daughter's preschool, at my place of worship, or at the grocery store.

I've never done sales. What if I'm not the real social type?

jafra products, jafra cosmeticsYou don't have to have sales experience or be a social butterfly or Miss Chatty Cathy. The main thing is getting face-to-face with people. I just talk to people, wear my JAFRA pin on my jacket, and walk around with samples. Once people try the products, I make sure I follow up. I ask, "How did you like it? Is it working for you? Is the moisturizer giving you enough moisture? Do you need the next step up?" It's all a natural progression from just being enthusiastic about the products themselves.

Even when I started out and only had five customers, I still would follow up with them every few months. Then I got each of them to do a party (I always give the hostess a great gift!) and they invited 5 or 6 people that I didn't know. I would do a little demonstration - they only take a short time - whether it's skin care for the face, or a class where I bring the JAFRA spa line and tubs and towels and the women all soak their feet in the most wonderful bath salts. I even have a massage therapist who comes and works on the women. It's relaxing and fun. I don't stand up and give a speech. I just sit with the women and get to know them and talk about the products.

What kind of help will I get if I decide to do this?

I do trainings for the women I sponsor. I tell them how to use everything. I also offer to do the first demonstration for them or their first class. I give out outlines on how to do a skin care demonstration. I walk them through the basics of what people want to know: Who am I? What are they going to be experiencing today? What's the product? How do they use it? and What are the benefits? JAFRA has a wonderful training manual, really simple to follow, and they also have tele-trainings, updates on their business website, and a seemingly endless supply of resources online.

We are a team. JAFRA is unique that way - we all support each other and share information. There's no cutthroat competition. We meet a few times every couple of months for various reasons. I'll do my own trainings every few weeks. For women in my branch who live outside of New Mexico, I hook them up with JAFRA trainers in their own communities. With my larger district I might meet once a month. And we have an annual conference every year. Conferences give you new ideas on how to do things. Go with extra bags because the company is so generous with products! I used to go to business conferences all the time, but I had never been so inspired as I was at the JAFRA conference. You get to network and meet incredible women from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. The camaraderie is wonderful. So even though you're your own boss, you have team support.

What's it like to be your own boss?

I can work from eight till midnight if I want. I can get up at six in the morning and call people while in my pajamas. I can make as much money as I want. I can do a little advertising in the paper. I can go knocking on doors if I want. Most importantly, it allows me to be home when I need to be there. I had my daughter when I was 40. I didn't wait that long to become a mom so that I could try to shoehorn a 40-50 hour work-week into 3 days, or some other supermom schedule. And I'm helping other women. That feels great!

How much money can I make and how much time will it take?

How much extra money would you like to make in a year? There are three basic levels of commitment. Some women just want to buy products for themselves and maybe their family and friends. Those are the hobby people. Then there are those who want part-time income, maybe ten or twenty thousand a year. I tell them what it takes to do that. Others are ready to work full time.

If someone tells me they want to make $10,000 a year, they need to do a $400 class maybe once a week. An average class brings in about $400 for approximately four hours of your time, including set up and travel time, and organizing orders. You keep fifty percent of what you bring in, which comes to at least $50/hour. Where can you make that in New Mexico? And I find these gatherings will frequently bring in $700-800. You do the math.

Once you get a certain amount of sales and you've signed up seven people as consultants, you get moved up to manager, where you start getting paid a percentage of your branch sales on top of your own retail sales.

What are my costs?

When you start, there's no expensive kit to buy. Certain product packs are only available to new consultants in their first 60 days and you need to buy at least one to be qualified. It costs anywhere from $75 to $100, and sometimes there are free offers. It can be done right on the Internet with credit cards, real simple. To stay as an active consultant, you have to place a retail order of $150 once every four months, at fifty percent commission that's only $75.
