I have been a systems analyst for 19 years, with contracts
from such major corporations as Estee Lauder, Sun
Healthcare, Long Island Savings Bank, Pep Boys, and
Norwood Consulting. In addition to my technical background,
I also hold a degree from the School of Visual Arts
in New York City.
I've always been a team player with a stick-to-it
work ethic. As a techie, my bosses were happy because
I was thorough and consistent. I uncovered and worked
through potential problems before they had a chance
to erupt, saving my department from production problems
down the line. I put in fierce hours to make deadlines,
and always turned out a good product. When my former
boss would compliment me (yes Gary, that's you) by
saying, "Lori, I've got a high visibility project
for you," it meant I would have to pull some all-nighters
to get the job completed on schedule.
I carried a pager or cell phone and was always available
for work. It wasn't unusual for me to put in 60 -
80 hours per week.
And
then my world changed.
I became a mother.
When I gazed in my little one's eyes, I knew that
it would be hard to balance my high-tech demanding
job with my little one's needs. When my boss would
call me, I knew that I would jump, and by doing so
I would be ignoring my child; someone else would be
raising her.
I had to find a way to be a parent and still keep
working in the field I loved. And so, a business was
born. With the World Wide Web growing at a phenomenal
rate, it made sense to combine my techie skills and
good graphic design sense. I still work hard, but
my child's needs can be brought into the equation.
And although I sometimes work crazy hours and pull
occasional all-nighters, they are done in the comfort
of my pajamas while my little one sleeps soundly.
They say that women-owned web businesses are growing.
Well, mine is a prime example.
